Note to Parent
Angry Octopus is a kid favorite. Parents report that their children use the techniques in the story to calm themselves and also remind their parents to use the same technique. This story received national attention on ABC’s Shark Tank. Every child has a different emotional maturity, attention span, and need. While the stories are best suited for ages 6-12, do not let this be your primary reason for selecting. You know your child best and remember this is not about the reading level. The focus is on the actual techniques.

"This is therapeutic for some kids- I am always unsure how hyperactive kids will react to progressive muscle relaxation, but 4/5 clients I've used this with have really enjoyed it, been able to self-calm & follow along, and even became so relaxed that they were yawning (and not bc they were bored haha). Helps kids understand anger, triggers, warning signs/self-awareness, and coping. I'd recommend the Angry Octopus coloring book a companion to encourage more coping skills for anger."

Angry Octopus An Anger Management Story introducing active progressive muscular relaxation and deep breathing Lori Lite Max Stasuyk 8601401096207 Books Reviews
- This review is based on my opinion and not so much my child’s...but half the battle with books for my kids is that they don’t drive me absolutely crazy having to read them over and over again. This book drove me absolutely crazy and I only read it once. Like it made me feel so angry that I needed my own anger management book to recover with afterwards haha. It is EXTREMELY repetitive...like 6-7 pages in a row have the same exact pictures saying the same thing and that is my #1 thing that annoys me in children’s books. I understand kids work best with repetition but com’mon, there HAS to be a limit. Also, there are A LOT of words. I don’t want to come across as a lazy parent but also I’m not trying to read my toddler chapter books before bed when we got 7 books to go through. Luckily my 2.5 year old was bored after the second repetition of the story so I was saved from having to finish it.
- I bought this book for my 3 year old who has problems getting very angry and throwing a huge fit on the daily at home and at school. We are striving to teach him to take a breath before he looses it. I am very happy with this book. It has nice pictures and situational descriptions of the way he feels when he's angry. It goes deeper that some tantrum books. I know for my son when he's in a meltdown he's completely lost control its basically not even him.The book address the feeling of not being in control of your own body which I think resonates with him. I'm not sure he's fully able to grasp all of the exercises tightening muscles and everything. I usually just read the face and feet ones and skip the rest. It makes the book much more manageable for him attention span wise. More than anything it gives us a great starting point for discussing his own feelings and responses which I am very thankful for.
- My daughter LOVES this book and asks me to read it every night. We got it, because she is 3 1/3 and started throwing tantrums. She is already familiar with yoga breathing, so this kind of reinforced some of the techniques she is already familiar with and gave us something to refer back to when she starts getting worked up to remind her she can be the boss of her own emotions. It seems to have really helped. When she starts showing strong emotions, I can just point out that she is acting like an angry octopus. That clicks with her, and she tries really hard to get her emotions in check.
- Bought for my 4 years old who gets frustrated easily.
The book is long, half of it tells you how to tense and relax each part of your body, my son was not following the steps although he listened to the whole story twice.
I found it a bit boring although it is a cute concept.
Update my son seems to like the book, he doesn't really follow the steps but he listens ...
Update of the update this book does seem to relax my son. He fe asleep twice while I was reading this book although he doesn't really follow the relation steps the repetition seems to work, he does complain that is a long book but I read it anyway ) - This is therapeutic for some kids- I am always unsure how hyperactive kids will react to progressive muscle relaxation, but 4/5 clients I've used this with have really enjoyed it, been able to self-calm & follow along, and even became so relaxed that they were yawning (and not bc they were bored haha). Helps kids understand anger, triggers, warning signs/self-awareness, and coping. I'd recommend the Angry Octopus coloring book a companion to encourage more coping skills for anger.
- My 5 year old son was having anger problems after our divorce, so I looked to books for help. The Angry Octupus is an great tool to teach children of many ages how to relax, breathe and calm themselves to slow down and eventually work through their anger and anxiety. I learned from it myself. I love this book so much, that I have loaned it out and suggested it to many friends. This should be in every home, school and counseling office as a resource for children, parents and teachers alike.
- This is a very well-crafted relaxation story that takes you, step-by-step, through active progressive muscular relaxation meditation. The story pays special attention to bringing attention to feelings and sensations and it highlights important concepts such as self-reflection, body awareness and cooperation. This is a great book to read aloud to your own children as well as any children you have the opportunity to read to! It makes a great addition to a yoga class or a bedtime ritual and school teachers could use it to help their students relax. The sea creatures are adorable and I love the brightly colored palette and the blurred background lends to the feeling of being under the sea. This book pairs perfectly with Angry Octopus Color Me Happy, Color Me Calm by Lori Lite. Together, they pack a power punch and are great books to help children to enjoy being calm and aware.
- Very nice book. My family and I enjoy it and use the term "Angry-Octopus-ing" when someone is getting to crazy from being upset. The breathing and stuff helps redirect the kids a bit when they're sooo upset.
It's a bit expensive for a paperback book, but definitely worth the money.
